my life over the past few days has just been crunching on nanoreno and freelance stuff. it’s been a while since i had a personal project/game dev project i was as passionate about as brewitched, so it’s really nice to have something to go to amongst the adult stuff. also, i’ve been watching card captor sakura for inspiration because reasons.
been making great progress writing out the story and mapping the characters down— effie, the protagonist, has the braids (though i changed her hair to more brown than pink, eden is the slick dude with the cup of tea (the teashop owner) and the other girl is one of effie’s hs friends, myrtia. the pic of eden is kinda old because i’ve since fixed his neck to make him look less like a pigeon.
sprites aren’t finished by any means and the block colours are just there for testing colour schemes… can’t wait to actually finish them!

This lamp absorbs 150 times more CO2 than a tree
It’s still in the “so crazy it just might work” stage, but these microalgae-powered lamps, invented by French biochemist Pierre Calleja, could absorb a ton of carbon from the air every year. That’s as much as 150 to 200 trees. [x]
YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. This is ingenious.
The design is a light bulb surrounded by a glass casing. The glass is filled with (water based) media and microalgae. The top is permeable to gasses so that gas exchange can occur. All of the wiring is linked to the grid underground.
Since the light source is inside, it gets scattered and “dimmed” by the water and algae. This makes it less glaringly bright and scatters the light wider, which is good for a street light. It is not longer white light as well, which helps make it easier on the eyes while still providing light.
At the same time, it provides the light for photosynthesis in the algae, so they are continuously exchanging CO2 for O2, not just in the day. It also provides a source of heat, which helps keep the algae from going dormant during cold weather (as in the snowy picture above).
And notice how I did not specify permeability - that’s because NOx’s (NO and NO2) are also permeable and can be used as nitrogen sources to microalgae. In fact, algae are relatively low maintenance. As autotrophs, they don’t require super complex media, not does it really need to be changed/added to. (I’m actually fairly certain that there would still be algae in these tanks a year later; it may need to be cleaned or something, but there would be some living algae.)
and they’re so pretty too
this is critical research for the magical girl vn i’m making
How To Read A 223-Page Novel In Just 77 Minutes
Spritz is a company that makes a speed-reading technology which allows you to get through a mass of text, reading every word, in a fraction of the time it would take if you were turning the pages of a book or swiping through a Kindle.
The basis of Spritz concept is that much of the time spend reading is “wasted” on moving your eyes from side to side, from one word to the next. By flashing the words quickly, one after the other, all in the same place, eye movement is reduced almost to zero. All that’s left is the time you take to process the word before the next one appears.
The company is selling licenses for other companies who might want to use the technology in operating systems, applications, wearables, and websites. Obviously, the tiny screen of a smart watch instantly springs to mind.
But the real revelation of Spritz is in trying it yourself.
it’s nanoreno time! a game dev challenge where you have to make a visual novel from start to finish in a month, i’m stupidly participating even though i’ll be spending half of march in san fran at GDC.
BREWITCHED - a tea-themed magical girl otome visual novel
’Effie was just like every other high-school girl until a weird looking tea-shop pops up on her route home. On a dare to go inside, she hesitantly drinks a cup of tea from the young owner of the store and then, everything changes. The shop disappears, the owner keeps popping up and there’s a whole new set of responsibilities to undertake. Infused with new magical tea powers, Effie must defend her town from distraught and misguided spirits, working with her friends and the strange tea-shop owner. Tea, often associated with spiritual harmony and calm, is the weapon she will use in her new magical form to defeat them, soothing them back to their normal state. DARJEELING! EARL GREY! OCHA!’
i’ll probably be posting some of the art here as it gets finished, but if you want to follow the dev thread i have one over at the lemmasoft forums!
